We have an exciting announcement to share about the iconic Sylvia’s Restaurant, the institution behind the beloved soul food brand, Sylvia’s!
On June 10th, Sylvia’s Restaurant received the renowned James Beard Foundation’s America’s Classics Award! This accolade honors independent restaurants that have been pivotal in American food culture and was presented to just six recipients this year. Receiving this award requires the business to be a “locally and independently owned restaurant with timeless appeal, beloved in its region for food that reflects the character and cultural traditions of its community,” according to the foundation’s guidelines.
The late Sylvia Woods, “The Queen of Soul Food,” opened the restaurant in 1962, bringing South Carolina soul food to Harlem. Over the past 62+ years, the restaurant has been a destination for international icons, foodies, and Harlemites, while still being owned and operated by the Woods Family. Serving up a myriad of dishes from BBQ short ribs and fried chicken to collard greens and cornbread, Sylvia’s Restaurant remains a must-visit community favorite.
The Sylvia’s Soul Food Brand born out of Sylvia’s Restaurant continues to provide consumers with products and ingredients for whipping up the delicious dishes right in their kitchens. Celebrate this James Beard Award by enjoying Sylvia’s Soul Food Brand at home today!
